POINT PLEASANT, NJ — Point Pleasant Boro High School students who are planning to ride e-bikes to school will have to register them with the district, officials said.
In a letter to parents on Wednesday that was shared on social media, the district laid out rules for students who want to ride their e-bikes.
New Jersey's e-bike law became effective on July 19, and bars teens younger than 15 from riding e-bikes. It also requires teens 15 and 16 years old to have a permit to ride them. Those 17 or older riding need a driver's license under state law.
It also requires that e-bikes that can go faster than 20 mph be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and insured.
Helmets are required.
To ride them to school, the e-bike must be registered with the district, with proof that the student has a permit or license to ride one, and proof of insurance and registration for e-bikes that can go faster than 20 mph.
Registration forms are available through the district, the letter says.
There is a $10 fee to register the bike with the school, and the letter says a decal will be issued once all the documentation has been submitted and approved.
Once approved, students riding them to school must have the e-bike in pedal mode on school grounds and park it in the designated area near the main entrance.
The letter also says e-bike privileges can be suspended if a student fails to follow the rules or obey the speed signs posted, along with failure to obey motor vehicle laws.
It also says students who hold parking permits — for motor vehicles or for e-bikes — are subject to random drug screening.
"Please understand that registration is a privilege, not a right, and students are expected to comply with all applicable school rules and New Jersey laws," the letter says.
