Flash flood warnings are in effect and roads are flooded in several areas of Ocean County Friday morning after heavy rainfall from early morning thunderstorms soaked the area.
Point Pleasant Beach police said Route 35 was closed due to severe flooding. Video published by News 12 New Jersey reporter Jim Murdoch showed water several inches deep and vehicles passing through it slowly.
The portion of Route 35 that merges with Route 88 remained closed as of 10 a.m. and Ramp C on Route 35 north was still closed, Point Pleasant Beach Sgt. Jeffrey Latshaw said.
"Otherwise, Route 35 is passable," he said.
In Brick Township, police said flooding was closing Burrsville Road north from the Exit 91 ramp, and Princeton Avenue was affected in the area of Elizabeth Road.
Point Pleasant police said multiple roads were flooded in town.
"Never attempt drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don't drown!" Point Pleasant police said.
The News 12 report said 4 to 5 inches of rain had fallen between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m.
The thunderstorms also caused power outages throughout the area. Nearly 700 homes in Toms River remained without power as of 9:30 a.m.
