Amy O'Grady, Special Education Teacher, 59

The Point Pleasant resident taught at Drum Point Elementary School in Brick

Amy O’Grady, a special education teacher in the Brick Township School District and resident of Point Pleasant, died Friday at Lennox Hill Hospital, New York, with her husband, Ray, by her side, according to Buckley Funeral Home. She was 59.

“Teaching students with disabilities was both a vocation and avocation for Amy, who was devoted to her students and their families,” according to the obituary on the funeral home’s website. In addition to teaching at Drum Point Elementary School, O’Grady worked for the Ocean County ARC , and she also had been a grader and a group leader for Praxis exams for Educational Testing Services.

O’Grady was a communicant of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Point Pleasant Beach, where she was a cantor and loved to sing in the choir. She was invited to sing with the Trenton Diocesan choir and was known for her heartfelt rendition of Schubert’s “Ave Maria.” She also was a wonderful wedding singer.

O’Grady took great joy in being ”Aunt Amy,” according to the obituary, and had many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

“It should be noted, among many other roles in our family, Amy was the family ‘grammarian’ for our law school students, doctoral students and college students,” the obituary reads. “Hopefully, there are no mistakes in this text, she would not be happy.”

O’Grady was born in Jersey City and moved to Point Pleasant Beach as a baby. She moved to Point Pleasant after she married Ray.

She was predeceased by her parents, “Poppa Tom” and Jean Jordan, and her brother Mark Jordan of Santa Rosa, Calif. She is survived by her husband, Ray O’Grady, sister Claire Crilly and husband Pat; brothers Chris Jordan and wife Julie, Thomas H. “Duke” Jordan Jr. and wife Monica, sister-in-law Katie Jordan, 13 nieces and nephews, 17 grandnieces and grandnephews and many loving friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5 at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 406 Forman Ave., Pt. Pleasant Beach. The funeral Mass is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 at St. Peter’s.
