The US Coast Guard launched near Point Pleasant Beach this weekend to monitor a reportedly distressed sailboat, according to Petty Officer Seth Johnson.

The Coast Guard launched around 10:15 a.m. on Sunday and spoke to the boat's operator who spoke in Italian, Johnson said.

The water was rough for sailing, so the Coast Guard wanted to help, he said.

The Coast Guard offered a life jacket and a radio, but the operator refused it. The boat then anchored later on Sunday, Johnson said.

On Monday, the boat appeared to be operating and moving, but Johnson said the Coast Guard will continue to monitor the situation.
