POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department bid farewell to Detective Derek O'Neill, who has retired after 25 years of service.

O'Neill began his career in Point Pleasant Beach as a special law enforcement officer and was hired as a full-time police officer in 1999.

He developed the police department’s first Bicycle Unit, which he supervised, and he served as the department’s school resource officer.

As the school resource officer O'Neill was responsible for the security of the schools and implemented many successful programs through the community. Among those were the LEAD and DARE programs, summer youth camps, and Bike Hoedown Rodeos, the department said.

"Detective O’Neill is known for his close ties to the community," the police department said, along with "the relationships with the faculty and students of the schools, and his loving dedication to his family. "
