Ex-Point Pleasant Area Member Of Clergy Accused Of Sex Abuse

The names of more than 100 additional priests and members of the clergy were released in a new disclosure this week made by attorneys who believe the state's Catholic dioceses need to be more forthcoming about what they know. One of them reportedly served in the Point Pleasant area.

The law firms of Jeff Anderson & Associates released a report containing the names and histories of more than 300 people accused of sexual misconduct in the Archdiocese of Newark, Diocese of Camden, Diocese of Metuchen, Diocese of Paterson and Diocese of Trenton. Patch has identified only those who were formally accused of sexual abuse by law enforcement, Jesuits or the Catholic church. Patch also only listed names not previously disclosed.

Nearly 200 names on the new clergy list were already named by the Catholic church earlier this year. The new disclosure contains more than 100 names of people that were not previously released. Anderson also announced the filing of a lawsuit by a sexual abuse survivor against all of the New Jersey Catholic bishops and the New Jersey Catholic Conference for "maintaining a public hazard by keeping secret the names of all clergy accused of sexual misconduct in New Jersey."

He also demanded that all five New Jersey bishops release the identities, background information and histories on all clergy accused of sexual misconduct with minors, "which has largely been concealed."

The Archdiocese of Newark said it will continue to focus on "transparency and accountability" and reinforcing established reporting and prevention policies and programs to protect minors and support victims in our parishes, schools and ministries.

The archiocese said it is engaging in "full and proactive collaboration with state and local law enforcement officials and with the Attorney General’s office continues,” according to the statement.
