NJ Winter Storm Updates: 400 Accidents/Assists, Snow Totals, Speed Restrictions, Treacherous Roads - 12/17/16

New Jersey was hit by a winter storm Saturday, and it's been dealing with a slew of accidents, speed restrictions and a traffic mess.

A winter weather advisory was in effect until 2 p.m. in New Jersey counties, except for those south of Union, Essex and Warren. The State Police said they handled as many as 400 accidents and assists in the storm.

Road Crews were working throughout the night and morning, emergency 911 operators were handling calls coming out of communication centers and making sure that we have emergency resources being dispatched where necessary.

"With the transition to rain today, we may experience freezing on colder surfaces which could result in ice being present on sidewalks, bridges, overpasses and untreated roadways, said Jeffrey S. Paul, director, Office of Emergency Management for the Morris County Dept. of Law & Public Safety. "Please exercise caution when driving and walking on wet surfaces."

This is what New Jersey was seeing as of 10 a.m.:

• Hazard types...mostly freezing rain, although Sussex and Warren were still getting at least four inches of snow.
• Ice accumulations...around a tenth to two tenths of an inch.
• Timing...snow has changed to freezing rain across most of the area. The freezing rain should transition to plain rain late this morning.
• Impacts...ice and snow accumulations will create treacherous conditions on all untreated pavements and possibly produce scattered power outages.
• Temperatures...rising into the lower 30s this morning...topping off in the mid 30s to around 40 this afternoon. precautionary/preparedness actions...

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. The NWS says to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility and use extra caution while driving.
