Beyond researching local candidates and issues, it's never a bad idea to familiarize yourself with what your ballot will actually look like on Election Day.

Vote 411 allows you to input your street address to see what's on your ballot, your polling place, upcoming debates, and more localized information.

Types of races on the ballot

The 2019 ballots in New Jersey will serve as the mid-term elections for the Statehouse races. One Senate district (one seat) and 40 Assembly districts (two seats each) will be up for grabs (see the list of candidates below).

The ballots feature a variety of local races, so expect to see school board, town council, and other municipal contests on your ballot. Many county positions are also up for grabs, such as sheriff and freeholder.

Public question

Voters will be deciding whether to support a constitutional amendment to extend the $250 property tax deduction that veterans receive to continuing care retirement centers. The amenment could compel the retirement centers to pass the value of the deduction on to veterans in the form of credits or payments.

Voter rights

If you did not provide identification to the county commissioner of registration or if the identification information could not be verified (i.e., your driver's license number or the last four digits of your social security number), you may be asked to show identification at the polling place when you got to vote.

Identification may include, but not limited to, any current and valid photo ID: NJ driver's license, military or other government ID, student or job ID, store membership card, United States Passport, bank statement, car registration, government check or document, non-photo NJ driver's license, rent receipt, sample ballot, utility bill or any other official document

NJ Statehouse races, and what's at stake

In the Garden State, Democratic control of the Statehouse – the Assembly and the Senate – will likely continue.

But will the Statehouse be shaped in a way that can help Gov. Phil Murphy – who has struggled to get legislation such as marijuana legalization approved – push his agenda to the finish line?

Murphy has tried and failed, and tried and failed, to get momentum on what was practically his signature issue when he ran for election in 2017: marijuana legalization.

Murphy, faced with likely no-votes from a handful of Democrats and unanimous Republican opposition, reportedly came within five state Senate votes of getting the legislation passed earlier in the year.

He also has faced stiff opposition from Republicans and Democrats alike on another signature issue: Passing a tax hike on those who make more than $1 million a year.

That could change with this election, however. Democrats could pick up anywhere from two to six Assembly seats in Morris County and South Jersey and possibly chip away at the teflon-tight opposition on those two issues.

Democrats have been working hard to win those Morris seats, boosting the statewide spending total to $7.1 million so far this year, a half-million more than the last time they had the ballot to themselves, according to The Record.

Democrats hold a 54-26 majority in the Assembly.

Key races

The Record identified at least four races as elections to watch:

District 1: Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties: This is an area where Democrats picked up a seat on the congressional level, and they have a shot at the legislative level. The race got headlines recently when the candidates ripped a mailer featuring Republican Antwan McClellan as a racist attack. The Republicans said General Majority PAC, an organization linked to South Jersey power broker and Murphy's opponent George Norcross III, altered McClellan's image. Districts 21, 24 and 25: Morris, Somerset and Union counties: These races were close last time, and Democrats have been spending money on TV ads and other campaign efforts to try to win at least two additional seats that could be favoratble to Murphy. The region overlaps with another congressional district that flipped from Republican to Democrat in last year's congressional races.
