Point Beach Mayor Upset Over Borough Council's Approval Of Liquor License For Martells

Mayor's objection stems from an alcohol-related fatality back in August of 2013.

Mayor Vincent Barella is not happy with the Point Pleasant Beach Borough Council’s recent decision to renew Martells Tiki Bar liquor license in the wake of a lawsuit involving a fatal, alcohol-related accident, according to nj.com.

“Point Pleasant Beach needs to care about this stuff,” Mayor Vincent Barrella said in a phone interview after the hearing. “We need to care even though the young lady was not from here.”

Bergen County resident Ashley Chieco, 26, died Aug. 16, 2013, after she spent the day drinking at Martells. The lawsuit contends bartenders continued to serve her, even though she was highly intoxicated.

Chieco was killed when a vehicle she took illegally from a Martell’s parking lot collided with a car in on Route 18 in Old Bridge. Police said Chieco was driving the wrong way and that her blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

The other driver, Dana Corrar, was seriously injured.
