POINT PLEASANT BEACH – The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department said it found no evidence to back up a social media post claiming that an abduction plot was underway.

The police department on Tuesday addressed a Facebook post that allegedly claimed a plot was devised to abduct a young woman outside of MacGregor's Gym on Monday.

The police department "takes these allegations very seriously and will investigate to the fullest extent possible," Chief Joseph Michigan said.

Detectives reviewed video surveillance cameras and spoke to several business owners in the area. No video, witnesses or any other corroborating evidence was obtained to prove or disprove that this incident occurred, Michigan said.

Offers spoke with the complainant and "we were only able to verify that an elderly woman attempted to pass out religious literature when she entered her vehicle," Michigan said.

The police department has not received any other related complaints.

"We have no doubt that the woman felt uncomfortable and uneasy with a stranger walking up to her in an attempt to pass out literature," Michigan said. "This practice from religious groups happens frequently in the downtown and Boardwalk area. However, there is no evidence to suggest that any other criminal intent was afoot."

The department encourages anyone who feels uncomfortable, threatened or otherwise suspicious of activities to contact the police department immediately at 732-892-0500.
