Point Boro Fights to Stay Alive in State Baseball Playoffs

The Point Boro baseball team is still alive in the NJSIAA sectional baseball playoffs, after a stunning upset of top-seeded Middlesex on Tuesday.

Today at 4 p.m. the 16th-seeded Panthers (11-13) take on eighth-seeded Voorhees on the road in the Central Jersey Group II quarterfinals.

The Panthers, who got into the playoffs thanks to an NJSIAA rule that seeds teams with less than .500 records to fill out brackets, are making the most of that good fortune.

On Tuesday, senior John Dunbar pitched a five-hit shutout in the 3-0 victory over  Middlesex, which came into the game with just two losses. Meanwhile, the Panthers scratched out runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings, with Keith Murphy and Ryan Prout each hitting home runs.

Voorhees (12-10), which beat A.L. Johnson 10-0 on Monday, is led offensively by Tyler Duplaga, who has a .500 batting average with 21 runs batted in, and Trey Conroy, who has 19 RBI. Conroy, who is the Vikings' top pitcher, got the victory in Monday's game.
