Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Wants Blanket Coverage with Beach Rules
Mayor wants to ensure the quality of life and peace of residents is protected as state builds dunes and widens beaches.

Does Point Pleasant Beach need to add to its ordinances to effectively deal with the changing landscape of its beachfront?
With the impending dune construction and beach replenishment that will result in public beachfront where it hasn’t been previously -- including in front of private homes -- Mayor Vincent Barrella says he want to be sure that the town is doing everything possible to help maintain a good quality of life.
Barrella brought up the issue at the Sept. 2 Borough Council meeting, and mentioned the issue again Tuesday night. Among his key concerns are what hours people will be allowed on the beach, controlling alcohol consumption and smoking.

“The property lines will end at the mean high water mark,” he said, meaning there will be a greater expanse of beach available. “It entitles us to charge a beach fee. Does that give us more latitude to set and enforce the rules in those areas in front of homes?” he asked.
Councilman Thomas Toohey, who noted he and the mayor have been discussing the issue, said there may not be a lot the town needs to do.

“I feel there are a number of state and municipal regulations that cover this already,” he said, but added he would sit down with Barrella to doublecheck.
Barrella said that while there maybe ordinances and state laws in place that will cover it, he wants to be sure.
“I favor a belt-and-suspenders approach,” he said.
