Point Pleasant Boro Votes For School Cops

Point Pleasant Boro residents, by a small margin, agreed to pay nearly $200K for police enforcement at the town's four schools.

Point Pleasant Boro residents voted Tuesday to pay nearly $200,000 for police enforcement at the town's four schools.

Here are the results:

Point Pleasant decided to spend $198,000 to provide four full-time municipal police officers at all four schools during the normal school day. Approval results in a permanent increase in the district’s tax levy, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association.

School boards may place questions on the ballot asking voters to approve spending outside of the state’s 2 percent tax levy cap. The question must state if the additional revenue sought would represent a permanent or a one-time increase in the district’s tax levy.

Point Pleasant Boro schools announced earlier in year that they planned to get additional police officers throughout the school day, according to a letter from town and school officials.

In a joint letter signed by the police, the school district and the mayor, the town said it was making the decision after meetings that assessed the schools' security.

"In today's ever-changing world, there is always room to evolve and continue to look at ways to increase security while still maintaining a positive school environment," the letter said.

The decision also follows an incident earlier this year when a possible security threat prompted a temporary shelter-in-place at Memorial School.
