Point Pleasant Police Issue Warning On Off-Road E-Bikes

Some electric motorbikes are designed for off-road use only, not public roads, police said. Riders require licenses for the off-road types.

POINT PLEASANT, NJ — With the rise in popularity of low-speed electric bicycles, the Point Pleasant police is warning riders to make sure they are aware of the laws governing the use — including which are actually permitted on public roads.

Some of the electric bicycles that are being ridden on public roads "are not e-bikes but rather electric motorbikes, and by definition, would require an operator’s license as well as registration and insurance," Point Pleasant police said in a recent post on their Facebook page.

Low-speed electric bicycles are restricted to reaching a speed of no more than 20 mph.

Electric motorbikes such as the Sur Ron and Talaria XXX, and other similar electric motorbikes are designed for off-road use only, as detailed on their respective websites, police said.

"They lack the requirements of bicycles and e-bikes for legal on-road use," including speed and power restrictors, and many are able to reach speeds in excess of 40 mph, more than double the legal limit.

"These types of motorbikes do not fit any of the electric bike classes in New Jersey because it is made for off-road use and its power level of 3,000 to 7,000 watts exceeds the requirement of e-bikes to have motors of less than 750 watts," police said. "These motorbikes also do not have functional pedals to classify it as a bicycle."

Police will issue summonses for the illegal operation on public roads and these electric motorbikes are subject to impoundment.

"These electric motorbikes are extremely fast and inherently dangerous, especially when they are being operated by younger, less experienced operators," police said. "As we all try to navigate this ever-evolving technology together, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in addressing these safety concerns. Please understand that the education and enforcement efforts of the Point Pleasant Police Department are for the protection and safety of the riders and the public as a whole."

Parents are encouraged to view the manufacturer’s websites before purchasing such bicycles for their children as many companies have warnings about the legalities and age restrictions.
