Proposed Point Pleasant Short-Term Rental Ban Change Addresses Boats

POINT PLEASANT, NJ — The Point Pleasant Borough Council introduced an ordinance Monday night to tighten up its restrictions on short-term rentals in the borough.

The proposed changes will clean up some language in the ordinance that was passed in November 2020, when towns around the Jersey Shore were putting in restrictions in response to unruly parties that popped up in rentals during the pandemic, violating gathering limits and stressing law enforcement resources.

The issue, Mayor Robert Sabosik said, is some people who own boats in Point Pleasant have been offering them as short-term rentals because they weren't specifically residences, as described in the ordinance.

"People have been skirting the rules," Point Pleasant business administrator Frank Pannucci Jr. said during the meeting, renting out their boats for short-term stays.

"That was never allowed, either, " Pannucci said after the council meeting. But people had been renting out their boats on the pretense that they were not specifically barred under the ordinance.

The changes will address that loophole, Pannucci said.

The ordinance is scheduled for second reading and final vote at the May council meeting.
