Two people were conducting what has been called a “First Amendment audit,” a test of law enforcement’s knowledge of laws regarding the right to film law enforcement. The incident happened on May 26 at the Manasquan Inlet Coast Guard station in Point Pleasant Beach.

The encounter has drawn some sharp reaction on social media from people in and outside of the law enforcement community, some of whom saw the incident as an unnecessary distraction for the Coast Guard.

The two told Coast Guard members that they were "doing a quick audit see what happens. Hopefully nothing will happen."

The two people claimed they saw video cameras on the station and said "they're watching us and we're watching them."

One unidentified Coast Guard member confronted the two and said, "I'm just really curious. You know there is such a thing called terrorists who love to watch and record what we do."

The protesters asserted they were not terrorists, but other confrontations followed. Here's what happened:
