A state project that is set to cause lane closures on Route 35 could cause some problems when a big cancer-fundraiser is held in Point Pleasant Beach, officials say.

Point Pleasant Beach Chief of Police Joseph Michigan told The Ocean Star he's concerned about the traffic because of the lane closures on Route 35 before the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday, Oct. 21.

“We’ve got 20,000 people coming for the breast cancer walk and it’s tough as it is with the two lanes open and now it’ll be down to one and NJDOT said there’s no way they can reopen it,” the chief told The Ocean Star.

Work will include the installation of barrier curb on the southbound shoulder, construction of a temporary pedestrian detour, and installation of protective shielding. The contractor will close one lane in each direction as the project to repair the bridge advances, DOT officials say.

The $6.3 million dollar federally-funded project will replace the deck, parapets, sidewalk, and other improvements to the superstructure, substructure, lighting, and approaches to the bridge. The project is designed in stages to minimize impacts to traffic. The project is expected to be complete by summer of 2019.
