TOMS RIVER, NJ — Good samaritans intervened Wednesday night when a woman was being stabbed by a man during what police said was a domestic violence incident on North Bay Avenue.

The woman was in surgery Wednesday night for her injuries, said Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department. Her condition was not available.

The woman was driving along North Bay Avenue about 4:45 p.m. when the man, who was her passenger, started stabbing her, Messina said.

The woman pulled over near Whitty Road and got out of the vehicle, but the man chased her and kept attacking her, Messina said. That's when the good samaritans, who saw what was happening, jumped in to stop the man and held him until police arrived.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The man has been charged with first-degree attempted homicide and weapons offenses, charges that were approved by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, she said.

Toms River police did not identify either the woman or the man because it is a domestic violence incident.

The investigation by the Toms River Police Detective Bureau is continuing.
