These Are N.J.'s 105 Most Toxic Sites, And Funds To Clean Them Are At Risk
The cleanup for New Jersey's 106 toxic sites, some of which could be located in your neighborhood, face severe cuts under Trump's budget.

That toxic site down the street from you may just stay there a while longer. Currently, 105 sites in New Jersey are undergoing a massive cleanup, but those efforts could be severely curtailed if Congress pushes through President Trump's environmental budget.
Trump has proposed slashing $330 million out of the nearly $1.1 billion Superfund program in his 2018 budget, which a USA Today report says is a 30 percent cut.
The report notes that the Environmental Protection Agency program is already struggling to keep pace with a growing inventory of hazardous sites that pose dangers to public health and the local environment. Superfund sites have been linked to higher cancer risks as well as other diseases.

The money saved would likely be used to finance a boost in military spending and pay for a border wall with Mexico, according to the report. The Trump administration says it is merely reining in administrative costs, improving efficiencies and finding new ways to address the National Priority List that tracks Superfund sites.
The Trump budget proposal could impede this progress and leave millions of Americans living near dangerous pollutants, according to environmental advocates.

"From an environmental perspective, these sites pose devastating threats to the health of millions of people, including children, who live nearby. Roughly 11 million people and three to four million children live within a mile of a Superfund site," Nancy Loeb, the director of the Environmental Advocacy Center, wrote in an op-ed for The Hill.
The Superfund law was enacted nearly 40 years ago, targeting sites that had been decimated by decades of industrial and toxic waste. New Jersey has the longest list of Superfund sites in the country.
