3D Mammography Now Available at St. Francis Medical Center

Advanced technology allows for earlier breast cancer detection

St. Francis Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of 3D mammography to its wide array of radiology services. 3D mammography is an advanced screening test for breast cancer, and allows for earlier breast cancer detection.

3D mammography works by taking multiple images from varying angles, giving a fuller, clearer view of the breast. This fuller picture allows physicians to more accurately assess breast tissue and detect cancers earlier. Traditional 2D mammograms give only two views of the breast, from the top and side. Limited viewpoints can either hide potential cancers or create the illusion that a cancer is present when none exists. 3D mammography is particularly helpful for women with dense breasts.

“With 3D mammography, we can offer increased reliability and with that comes peace of mind for patients,” said Kathleen V. Greatrex, MD, radiologist and Chair Emeritus, Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at St. Francis Medical Center and Lourdes Health System. “Better image accuracy means more certainty, less false-positives and fewer callbacks to re-test patients. The less time a woman has to spend wondering ‘what if’ the better.”
