PRINCETON, NJ — The Princeton Public Schools Board of Education unanimously appointed Richard Miller as supervisor of social studies during its April 28 meeting, with the position set to take effect July 1.
Miller, a veteran Princeton educator and third-generation graduate of the Princeton public schools, returns to the supervisory role he previously held.
His daughter is a fourth-generation student at Princeton High School. He will earn $146,000 in the position through June 30, 2027, according to public documents.
Superintendent Mike LaSusa praised the appointment, noting Miller's deep roots in the district and the esteem in which he is held by colleagues.
"It's unusual to have someone who's been in the district for 30-plus years and who served as a supervisor for a number of those years, and who has the level of respect that Dr. Miller seems to universally have among every person that you talk to," LaSusa said. "We think this will be a new chapter for the Social Studies Department in the district, and we think it will lead to some really rich conversations and academic experiences for students."
Board of Education President Dafna Kendal said Miller taught two of her children and left a lasting impression on both.
"They can't agree on anything," Kendal said of her children. "They had many overlapping teachers, but you were the only one whom they both thought walked on water."
Kendal said Miller was able to engage students with different learning styles and needs. "You managed to engage both styles and ended up cultivating a love of history in both of them," she said. "I'm excited to see what you leading a department and bringing along teachers will do for the rest of the kids."
Miller, who said his passion has always been in the classroom, expressed enthusiasm for the new role.
"I'm really excited to return to this position once again," he said. "I work with amazing people, and I'm really excited to help guide this department as we move forward."
Miller added that his connection to Princeton runs deep. "I really love this place," he said.
