Princeton Marks Juneteenth With Flag Raising At Monument Park

PRINCETON, NJ — Princeton marked Juneteenth with a community flag-raising ceremony at Monument Park on June 18.

The event thanked community members for joining the annual observance and described the gathering as a way to honor the end of slavery in the United States.

The ceremony also celebrated "the resilience and contributions of the Black community."

The event was led by Municipal Administrator Bernard Hvozdovic, and it included remarks from Councilmembers Leticia Fraga and Leighton Newlin.

Princeton's Facebook post said Fraga and Newlin reflected on "the ongoing work of building a more just and equitable society."

The program also featured a performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by Olivia Strauli-Ellis, a vocalist from Notre Dame High School.

That performance was followed by the raising of the Juneteenth flag.
