PRINCETON, NJ - Sustainable Princeton is inviting residents to get moving this September with its Walk 'n Roll Challenge, a monthlong initiative encouraging walking and biking over driving.
The free challenge runs Sept. 1-28, with participants competing as walkers, bikers or both. Winners are determined by cumulative steps or miles logged during the month, and must live and/or work in Princeton to be eligible for prizes.
Walkers can register through an online form and will receive instructions to join the challenge via the StepUp app, which tracks steps from a phone without requiring a smartwatch or wearable device.
A non-smartphone option is also available for those who prefer to log steps manually. Bikers will receive a form each Monday in September to report their weekly mileage, using either a wearable tracker or the honor system, with an optional photo upload.
Prizes include an outfitting experience with free shoes and insoles, worth up to $225, donated by Fleet Feet Princeton, for the top walker. Second- and third-place walkers will receive a walking safety kit and a pair of Goodr sunglasses, respectively.
The top biker will win a full bike tune-up from Road Maestro, worth $95, with a bike accessory kit from Sourland Cycles and a headlight set from Walk Bike Princeton going to the second- and third-place finishers.
Weekly random drawings, sponsored by Locomotion, will also offer prizes throughout the month, including gym memberships and personal training sessions. Participants must be active during a given week to be entered in that week's drawing.
Organizers said electric bikes are welcome, as the challenge aims to promote car-free transportation broadly. Residents can register for both the walking and biking challenges, though steps and miles are tracked separately.
