The Princeton Green House Tours Return for a 4th Year

[Princeton, NJ]: With much anticipation, the Princeton Green House Tours return on Sunday, September 27, 2026. These guided tours showcase some of the most sustainable homes and gardens within the municipality of Princeton.

Each home and garden on the tour serves as a case study for a variety of different aspects of sustainable living, including home composting systems, LEED for Homes certifications, DIY projects, net-zero building, electrification, radiant heating, green roofs, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and so much more.

"With electricity rates rising this year, there's even more reason to think about ways to use less energy at home or generate your own with solar," says Christine Symington, Executive Director of Sustainable Princeton. "Fortunately, there are incentives available in New Jersey that can help make those investments more affordable, from insulation and air sealing to heat pumps and solar. The Green House Tour is a great opportunity to see what your neighbors have done, learn from their experiences, and explore options that can make your home more comfortable while lowering your energy bills."

PEC Chair, Anne Soos, remarked "it's great that these tours give folks a chance to learn how it is possible to have top-notch design and sustainability at the same time. Now with the ability to add ADU's in Princeton, these tours also give participants a chance to see some of the possibilities for these structures, as well. And, as a Master Gardener, I'm thrilled that we'll continue to feature sustainable gardening practices! Kudos to the PEC and Sustainable Princeton for all the organization that goes into this project."

In conjunction with the tour, there will be a Wednesday evening event hosted in partnership with the Princeton Public Library on September 23, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., which includes a panel discussion and video screening. The evening will start with a screening of a video tour of a new accessory dwelling unit. Afterward, sustainable building and landscaping experts will share their knowledge in a panel discussion. We'll also have someone who can answer questions about NJ state energy efficiency incentives. The library event is free and open to the public of all ages. For the in-person tours, this year there are 6 homes and 3 garden tours available on Sunday, September 27th. Tours are timed and guided, giving everyone a chance to see and understand all the highlighted elements of the home or garden. Advanced registration for each tour location is free, but required. Registration closes at midnight on the 25th. Waitlists will be kept for tours that are fully booked. Participants must be 18 years or older to take tours.
