COVID Spread Reduces In Mercer County, But By How Much?

The County reported a 40.7 percent decline in positive COVID cases from last week.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — Since the peak of the omicron surge, the spread of the coronavirus has reduced in Mercer County. The New Jersey Department of Health downgraded Mercer County's COVID-19 activity level from "very high" to "high" in its most recent weekly activity report.

At the "high" risk level, between 10-25 out of every 100,000 people were estimated to have the virus.

As of Friday, the County reported 166 positive COVID-19 cases, a 40.7 percent decrease from last week, when County officials reported 280 cases. However, the County reported more number of death this week — seven lab-confirmed and three hospitals reported.

This trend is consistent with what's happening across the state. COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to decline in New Jersey, but deaths from the virus remain high.

"These are still numbers we have not seen since last February," Gov. Phil Murphy said Wednesday at the state's weekly coronavirus news conference.

COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths are lagging indicators, which can rise even after a decline in cases.
