Cyclists to come to Princeton and the Safe Passing Law

While you should always be careful of pedestrians and bicyclists when driving on the roads, extra attention is imperative in these upcoming days. A numerous amount of bicyclists will be passing through town, with the first being Sal Lilienthal on his two-week, 700-mile long trek to "commemorate the French General Rochambeau" who fought in "support of George Washington and the colonists." After Lilienthal, an influx of cyclists will be expected to stay overnight in Princeton and the surrounding area on the 28th of August, as part of their New York to Philadelphia ride to "raise funds for the nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance." These events will be supported by local Princeton volunteers, who will set up overnight sights and manage them until the participants leave.

However, whether there's an event or not, all motorists should abide by the state's Safe Passing Law, signed by Governor Murphy earlier in the month. The law ensures that drivers move over one lane or create a space of at least four feet when passing a cyclist, if it is safe to do so. If not, the motorists must slow down their speed to at least 25 miles per hour.
