A River for All Seasons

An abundance of wild creatures depends upon the Delaware River for survival in all four seasons, including wintertime.

Land preservation in the river's watershed area has helped spark a rebound in the river's health and vitality.

The best opportunity for anglers to catch small mouth bass, muskie and walleye from the Delaware River is when average water temperatures remain below 45 degrees.

Bald Eagles rely on open waters in winter, particularly along the Delaware Bay, where they can find plenty of fish and prey to feed their young in early spring.

Mallards, black ducks, and Canada geese generally overwinter on the Delaware, relying upon thick, downy plumage to keep warm in icy water.

The Abbott Marshlands attract a variety of migrating waterfowl. Many species find the food needed here to refuel and rest before their long trip to their destination.

One of the best ways to observe Delaware River wildlife this time of year is to walk the portion of the D&R Canal towpath that runs along the river, from Bordentown to Frenchtown. With leaves off the trees, you can see the river most of the way, particularly with binoculars. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk or bike ride with opportunities to see an abundance of wildlife.
