A single winner who takes the winning as a lump sum would walk away with $462 million, or about $347 million after taxes.

The multi-state Mega Millions lottery was the largest in North American lottery history. The jackpot reached $640 million after no winning tickets were sold for Tuesday night's drawing.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was $390 million, with two winning tickets sold for the March 6, 2007, drawing — one in New Jersey (the Villas section of Lower Township), the other in Georgia.

Mega Millions is now played in 42 states and in Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
