Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Closes Investigation of Police Over Princeton Professor's Arrest

Princeton, NJ -- The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office has closed its investigation into the arrest of a black Princeton University professor by Princeton Police.

The Prosecutor’s Office’s initial investigation determined there was no wrongdoing on the part of the officer who arrested Princeton University Professor of African Studies Imani Perry on Feb. 6 on an active warrant.

"A few weeks ago, we stated that our office’s review found that the officer’s conduct was to be commended, not criticized," Mercer County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio said. "As Perry never filed a complaint with our office, or came forward to us with any additional evidence to be considered after we reached out to her, we’ve closed our case with that determination."

Perry was allegedly going 67 mph in a 45 mph zone on Mercer Street when an officer pulled her over and subsequently arrested her because of two unpaid parking tickets.

She was released after posting $130 bail, but subsequently complained about the way she was treated by police after her arrest.

Princeton Police released a video of the arrest, but Perry responded in a note published online that said the video “failed to show most of what I objected to.”

Princeton officials have said the town will investigate whether people should be arrested at all for a parking ticket.
