More Than 1,000 Workers Expected To March In Princeton Friday For May Day

PRINCETON, NJ — More than 1,000 people are expected to march through Princeton on Thursday for May Day, or International Workers' Day.

The rally is organized by the immigrants' rights group Resistencia en Accion NJ, calling for stronger worker protections and an end to immigration enforcement raids.

The event marks an increase from last year's nearly 800 participants, according to organizers.

A group of 50 cyclists will depart from Trenton and arrive at Princeton's Fountain of Freedom at 5:30 p.m. The broader march and rally will begin at 6 p.m.

"May Day is important so people know that we are out here fighting against injustices like wage theft and ICE detentions," said Elido, a community worker leader. "The march will show that we are all united in this."

The rally is co-sponsored by nearly 30 organizations, including the American Friends Service Committee, the Alliance of Jewish Progressives, the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.

" We are expecting more than a thousand people to attend. The entire Resistencia team is planning this for our 17 years in the struggle for our migrant community's rights," said Jenni Lopez, lead organizer with the mobilization.

Resistencia en Accion NJ described the action as a response to what the group characterized as attacks on human, worker and immigrant rights under the Trump administration.
