This Is New Jersey's Most Popular Restaurant, New Survey Says

Where does everybody go for food in New Jersey? Find out where.

The restaurant that was selected as the most popular in New Jersey makes sense. Its signature entree is a local staple: pizza. In a new survey from People magazine and Zagat, De Lorenzo's Tomato Pies in Robbinsville was selected as the most popular restaurant in New Jersey.

People teamed up with the "dining experts" at Zagat, a consumer group that rates eating places, to create a list of the most popular restaurants in the U.S. The magazine said the choices range from "local staples to renowned destinations."

"Since 1947 this family-owned pizzeria has made original Trenton-style tomato pies—a crispy, tomato-topped spin on the traditional Sicilian slice," according to the survey. "Although they specialize in create-your-own pizzas, folks swear by the clam or tuna tomato pie and seasonal salads."

To determine the list of restaurant winners, People Food editors considered Zagat's on-the-ground expert reviews, as well as its diner ratings and Google scores. The editors said they paid special attention to spots sourcing local ingredients and serving "iconic or regionally inspired food."

De Lorenzo's also was among five New Jersey pizza places that made the top 101 in the nation earlier this year, but it was second on the state's list. Santillo's Brick Oven Pizza in Elizabeth topped New Jersey's list on The Daily Meal’s 2017 ranking of America’s 101 Best Italian Pizzerias.

On that list, here was the description provided for the Robbinsville restaurant, which landed at number 62 nationally:

"DeLorenzo’s serves serious tradition with their pizza — 68 years’ worth. It was launched in Trenton in 1947 by Southern Italian immigrant Alexander "Chick" De Lorenzo; today, Delorenzo’s tradition is upheld by his grandson Sam Amico at the new location in Robbinsville, opened in 2007."
