Police Sgt. Michael Cifelli Announces Retirement

Cifelli was promoted to sgt. in 2007, and initiated the police department's Facebook page, Twitter account and Nixle program.

Princeton Police Sgt. Michael R. Cifelli is retiring, the police department announced Friday morning.

Cifelli graduated from the Camden County Police Academy and was hired by the Montgomery Police Department in June of 1988. He served in the Patrol Division there until June of 1993 when he was hired by the Princeton Township Police Department.

In joining the Princeton Police force, Cifelli was following in the footsteps of his step-father, Sgt. Jerry Offredo. Cifelli was promoted to Corporal in 1998 and to Patrol Division Sgt. in April of 2007.

During this time, he was a Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor and Head Firearms Instructor. He is an instructor at the Mercer County Police Academy, and has served as President of PBA Local #130, as well as on the Negotiations Committee. He served on many Department Committees such as the Honor Guard, Awards Program and others.

In 2011, Cifelli was transferred to the Community Services Bureau and assigned the duties of the Press Officer. Later, he oversaw the Communications Bureau.

Cifelli initiated the department’s Facebook page, Twitter account, Nixle program and two Tweet-a-Thons.

He received a letter of thanks by Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert for his skills at relaying information during severe storms to the public.

Cifelli is the recipient of many thanks and commendations from both inside and outside the department for various incidents alone or working as a part of a team, including two Meritorious Service Awards.

“Sgt. Cifelli has served this department well over his career and retires with the satisfaction of a job well done,” Princeton Police said in a statement issued Friday morning. “Many of our current supervisors were trained by Sgt. Cifelli and his legacy will continue on.”

“It has been a fantastic, rewarding career and I’m leaving with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime,” Cifelli said. “My immediate plans are to spend much needed time with my family.”

The Princeton Police Department wishes Sgt. Cifelli the best of health and good fortune in all his future endeavors.
