PRINCETON, NJ — Not in Our Town Princeton is sponsoring a forum on Sunday at 7 p.m. for the candidates for the Princeton Board of Education.

The forum will be held in the multipurpose room of the Princeton YWCA at 59 Paul Robeson Place, Princeton. The forum is free and open to the public. For those unable to attend, the forum will be live-streamed to the Not in Our Town-Princeton Facebook page.

Not in Our Town Princeton, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, is an interracial, interfaith social action group united to advance the cause of racial justice. Its forum will emphasize questions around the theme of social justice and equity in the Princeton school district.

The first hour of the forum will be focused on questions and concerns collected ahead of time from students at the Princeton Public Schools. The final forty minutes of the debate will allow the audience the opportunity to ask questions.

“We hope that this will be an opportunity for the community to truly engage in a conversation around issues of social justice and equity,” said Linda Oppenheim, the secretary of the Board of Not in Our Town Princeton. “Particularly following the release of the Princeton Public Schools’ Equity Audit report, it is important for the community to see where each candidate stands on these vital issues.”

The forum has been planned and moderated by current students and alumni of the Princeton district. Salma Hashem, a Princeton High School senior, commented on the importance of involving student voices throughout the process of planning this forum.

"It is so important to hear and to listen to the concerns and questions of the students of our district. At the end of the day, we are the ones who will be affected the most by the decisions the Board of Education and the district makes,” said Hashem.
