Headgear for Soccer? Princeton School Board Says 'Yes'
Protective headgear will be mandatory in the 2013-2014 school year for sixth graders who play soccer, field hockey and lacrosse.

Want your child to suit up for the soccer team? You better make headgear to your back to school sports shopping list.
With concussions among young athletes quickly becoming national conversation, Princeton Public Schools became the first in New Jersey to mandate protective headgear. Sixth grade soccer, field hockey and lacrosse players will be required to wear the soft helmets. The preventative measure is voluntary for seventh and eighth graders and high school athletes in those sports. The school board adopted the requirement earlier this month.
The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association supported the effort, according to the school district. However, some have criticized the move as giving parents a false sense of security.
