Princeton Ranks Among Best Places To Live In New Jersey, Niche 2026 Report Says

Princeton earned an overall A+ grade and landed at No. 3 in New Jersey in Niche's annual Best Places to Live rankings.

PRINCETON, NJ — Princeton has once again earned recognition as one of New Jersey's most desirable communities, ranking No. 108 nationally and No. 3 in the state on Niche's 2026 Best Places to Live in America.

The data-driven platform, now in its 12th year of rankings, evaluated communities statewide using public data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, combined with millions of resident reviews. Communities are assessed across factors including schools, cost of living, jobs, safety and local amenities.

Princeton received an overall grade of A+ from Niche, which describes the borough as offering residents a dense suburban feel where most own their homes.

Neighboring Princeton Junction also performed exceptionally well on the list, coming in at No. 62 nationally and No. 1 statewide. Residents there highlight its friendly atmosphere, easy commutes to New York City, New Brunswick and Philadelphia, and its proximity to Princeton's restaurants and shopping, calling it especially family-friendly with parks, pools and trails.

New Jersey's highest marks in the report were in education, transportation and diversity, while housing affordability was identified as an area with room for improvement.

Jersey City led all New Jersey communities nationally at No. 44 on the state list. Other New Jersey communities in the top 200 included Harrington Park at No. 67, Mountain Lakes at No. 154, Fanwood at No. 168 and Hoboken at No. 198.

Nationally, Niche said this year's top-ranked places tend to be smaller, walkable communities within major metro areas, giving residents access to jobs, amenities and transit while maintaining connected neighborhoods.

"People are increasingly looking for neighborhoods that offer both access to diverse career opportunities and a strong sense of community," Niche economist Allison Shrivatava said. "These smaller, walkable communities provide the mix of amenities and livability that families and young professionals both value."
