PRINCETON, NJ –—The Hun School in Princeton is seeking zoning map change to allow academic support uses on the Mason House site. The application will come before the Town Council during Monday’s meeting.

Mason House which was formerly the headmaster’s home was more recently used for academic support space to free up room elsewhere on campus for use by the infirmary during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Zoning Board granted a temporary use variance to permit the non-residential use of Mason House through December 2021. The school says that Mason House is no longer needed as a residence since the headmaster now resides in nearby Johnson House, which was a gift to the school and one that is not suitable for student housing.

The second property is “The Mall,” a linear green space running perpendicular to the back of Russell Hall, also known as the “Green Commons.” The school plans to keep this green space undeveloped "in perpetuity."

The school made a presentation to the Planning Board back in December 2019. They wish to place these two properties in the E-4 Educational District. Hun School has asked for the zoning map change to allow “academic support uses” on the Mason House site. They hope to use Mason House as a potential art gallery with art classrooms, meeting space, and office space.

The School also wishes to add a Floor Area Ratio (FAR) generated by the linear green space to the overall campus FAR. This FAR adjustment would allow for necessary and small-scale safety and accessibility improvements to existing facilities.

Princeton’s planning board has supported the zoning change request. The school is expected to make a presentation to the Council on Monday evening.
