Public Transit Makes A Comeback In Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ — The Township’s new municipal bus service began operations on Monday, Aug. 16. The 30-minute loops will make their first departure from Nassau Street and Palmer Square with stops at the Princeton Senior Resource Center, Elm Court, 400 Witherspoon St, Redding Circle, Princeton Shopping Center, Witherspoon/Franklin, and Merwick-Stanworth before returning to Palmer Square.

The Princeton Muni Service temporarily replaces the suspended FreeB shuttle. The township is meanwhile working to find a more permanent public transit solution.

The new system will run a continuous 30-minute loop, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. In the afternoons the transit will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday.

The township was recently able to renegotiate extended time for the service. Councilwoman Mia Sacks reported on Aug. 9 that WeDriveU will now include extra hours on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This will go into effect once the state signs off on it.

The service will operate for four months, during which time officials will evaluate the interim service, build bid specifications and go out to bid and award a contract for a long-term transit solution.

Last month the Town Council passed a resolution awarding the transit service contract to WeDriveU for $44,000.
