Princeton University Football Team Falls to San Diego in Season Opener

San Diego defeated Princeton, 39-29, on Saturday, according to espn.com.

Senior quarterback Quinn Epperly had 237 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw a pair of interceptions in the Princeton University football team’s 39-29 loss at the University of San Diego on Saturday, according to espn.com.

San Diego held Princeton scoreless until there were about 18 seconds left in the first quarter, jumping out to a 14-0 lead.

Epperly put Princeton on the board with a 12-yard run, but a failed two-point conversion left the score at 14-6.

The Tigers cut the lead to 14-12 early in the second quarter, following a 12-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Joe Rhattigan.

Following another Toreros score, a 34-yard field goal from junior Nolan Bieck made the score 21-15 just at halftime.

Princeton took its only lead of the game with just over 13 minutes left in the third quarter when Epperly connected with senior wide receiver Matt Costello for a 4-yard touchdown pass. Bieck added the PAT kick for a 22-21 lead.

San Diego reclaimed the lead for good with 5:25 left in the third when quarterback Keith Williams hit Reggie Bell for a 48-yard touchdown pass. A two-point conversion gave San Diego a 29-22 lead.

Williams passed for 277 yards and four touchdowns. Bell caught two of those scoring passes.

San Diego scored twice more in the game.

Epperly’s second touchdown pass was thrown to senior wide receiver Seth DeValve for 22 yards with 2:25 left to play.

DeValve had nine catches for 123 yards. Junior running back DiAndre Atwater led the Tigers rushing attack with 10 carries for 80 yards.

Senior linebacker Mike Zeuli had nine tackles and two sacks, according to goprincetontigers.com.

San Diego improved to 2-1. Princeton fell to 0-1, and hosts Davidson in the home opener at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
