Princeton's Free Preschool Program Gets $770K Boost From NJ

The district will now offer a new dual language immersion preschool class at Community Park School as well as a new class with the YWCA.

PRINCETON, NJ — Princeton Public Schools' free preschool program will now be offering more for the district's youngest learners thanks to $770,939 awarded by the New Jersey Department of Education.

The NJDOE accepted Princeton's Preschool Education Expansion Aid application and awarded the additional aid on Tuesday. This will allow the district to offer multiple new options including: a new dual language immersion preschool class at Community Park School as well as a new class in partnership with the YWCA.

"Free public preschool is widely recognized as an important path towards closing the achievement gap," said Superintendent Steve Cochrane. "This is an exciting opportunity for the Princeton Public Schools, and for our entire community. We look forward to opening our new classrooms on the first of October."

Beginning Oct. 1, the district preschool program will increase from two preschool classrooms to four. A mixed-aged dual language immersion class will also open at Community Park School where students will learn in both Spanish and English.

"This Spanish-language immersion class at Community Park supports our goal towards bilingualism for all students who enroll in the immersion program," said Cochrane.
