Rabid Raccoon Found In Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ — A raccoon that has tested positive for rabies was found by Princeton’s Animal Control Officer recently.

A lab test confirmed the rabid raccoon who was found on Spring Street near Vandeventer Avenue on Thursday, Dec. 5 at about 8 a.m.

Anyone who has had physical contact with raccoon, especially in this area, should seek medical attention right away.

If any pets have had physical contact with a raccoon, you should check with your vet and ensure the animal's rabies shots are up to date. Most at risk are outdoor cats.

Call the Princeton Police at 609-921-2100 if you notice a sick animal. Especially animals showing signs of neurological problem.

The following precautions are recommended:

• Avoid direct contact with wild or stray animals
• Do not feed or touch wild animals
• Do not allow your cats or dogs to have contact with wild animals
• Vaccinate your pets against rabies and keep vaccinations up to date
• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home
• Do not feed wildlife and do not leave food outdoors for extended periods of time
• Immediately clean up any spills from exterior bird feeders
• Ensure that garbage stored outdoors is inaccessible to wildlife
• Report all injuries and bites to persons or domestic animals to the Princeton Animal Control Officer 609-924-2728

Residents are encouraged to be alert and to report any sick or injured animals to the Princeton Animal Control Officer through the Princeton Police Department at 609-921-2100 extension 0.
