Shot Fired During Brawl At Ewing Daycare Center: Cops

A group of people were involved in the brawl, which happened after the daycare told a parent she couldn't leave her child at the center.

EWING, NJ — Police are investigating an incident in which a gun was discharged outside a daycare center in Ewing earlier this week. No one reported being shot at, but there was a brawl outside the facility, and police are receiving conflicting reports about what happened.

The brawl followed an incident reported just before 9 a.m. Monday morning in which a parent who was attempting to drop off her child at New Beginnings Child Care Center on Pennington Road was told her child couldn’t stay.

When an employee told the parent they didn't have a spot open for her child that day, the parent pushed the employee backwards in her chair and began to hit her, according to police, who responded and took a report of the incident. The employee was hospitalized with minor injuries.

A little more than six hours later, at 3:33 p.m., Ewing police received multiple calls of shots being fired and people fighting outside the daycare.

Responding officers found a group of three to five people fighting in the parking lot. Three of the people in the fight were related to the parent who was involved in the earlier incident, police said.

Police said some of the people involved in the fight had “injuries consistent with being in a fight,” but no one reported being shot or shot at. Police did find a shell casing during a search of the area.

A couple of people in the area said they heard a gunshot, but no one could provide a description of the shooter or what type of gun may have been used. Additionally, everyone involved in the fight gave conflicting stories on what had happened.

The daycare had no comment when contacted by Patch on Wednesday.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information can call the Ewing Police Department Tip Line at 609-882-7430 or Det. Shaler at 609-882-1313, ext. 5573.
