Snow Fun on D&R Greenway Land Trust's Sledding Hill

Preservation provides ideal sledding conditions for children of all ages

Snow has meaning beyond the catastrophic in Princeton.

Preservation brings lasting rewards, such as this perfect sledding on Greenway Meadows hill behind D&R Greenway Land Trust.

Snowflakes and sleds were far from visitors' minds, on that balmy spring day of 2006, as the non-profit launched the grand opening of their restored 1900 barn. General responses included relief that these sixty acres had been preserved, and delight that Ford 3 Architects had brilliantly restored Robert Wood Johnson's working barn into a memorable work-and-event-space.

Snowflakes, however, blanketed Greenway Meadows hill by wintertime. The word somehow went out that ideal sledding could ensue, now that this land is public space.

For the March nor'easters of 2018, D&R Greenway Vice President Jay Watson, made his way to the hill, capturing these images. Staff is treated to scenes of simpler times with every snowfall.

Yes, preserved land diminishes carbon footprints; provides native plants for native pollinators; maintains beauty itself. Greenway Meadows sometimes reveals the tracks of wild creatures, such as the red fox and/or the resident red-tail hawk.

But, for a few hours every winter, preservation in Princeton is also measured in sleds.
