Teen Found With Gun At Lawrence, Ewing High School Football Game

On Friday, police found a teen with a gun after a brawl broke out in the bleachers. None of the individuals involved were students.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — A varsity football game between Lawrence High School and Ewing High school was suspended on Friday evening after a teenager was found with a gun, Ewing police said.

Ewing High School hosted Lawrence High School for a varsity football game on Friday at 6 p.m. for the first time since March 2020 and a large crowd was in attendance.

Shortly after halftime, a fight broke out between a group of people on the home side of the athletic complex, Ewing school officials said. Ewing Police and school staff broke up the fight and found that a teenager involved in the fight had a handgun, according to the police.

The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with weapons offenses, police said.

“These individuals were not students at Ewing High School, nor were they students of Lawrence High School. This incident had nothing to do with students of either school, any kind of dispute between the schools, or the game being played,” Ewing School District said in an official statement.

After the gun was found, police cleared the athletic complex and the game resumed later with only a small group of family members, staff, and police, school officials said.

“We are very disappointed that this incident occurred and saddened and frustrated that a group of individuals could ruin what should be a fun and positive event,” the district said in the statement.

The school district thanked Ewing police for their assistance and apologized to those negatively impacted by this incident.

“It is clear from this incident that certain security concerns in the climate of Covid-19 are heightened. The administration will reflect on this occurrence, review with stakeholders including the Ewing Township police, and make adjustments in our scheduling, site supervision plan and procedures to prevent something like this from occurring again,” district officials said.

The incident is currently being investigated. Anyone with any video or other information regarding the incident is asked to contact Ewing Police Detective Andrew Condrat at (609) 882-1313 ext. 7583.
