Teen Pleads Guilty in Accident That Killed N.J. Superintendent: Prosecutor

The teenager pleaded guilty in the accident that killed Robbinsville Superintendent Steven Mayer in April.

The teenager charged in the accident that killed Robbinsville Superintendent of Schools Steven J. Mayer in April has pleaded guilty, Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said Wednesday morning.

The driver, whose was not identified because she was 17 at the time of the accident, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and a motor vehicle citation for careless driving.

The girl, now 18, was a senior at Robbinsville High School when she hit Mayer while he was jogging on Robbinsville Edinburg Road near Anderson Lane in Robbinsville on April 19.

She had been charged with death by auto, improper use of a cell phone while driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said she left the scene even though she was aware the accident occurred.

She called 911 and told police she believed she had hit someone with her car shortly after the accident, according to New Jersey 101.5.

She made the call from a school less than a mile away from the scene. Her father's voice could also be heard on the call. It wasn't clear if she called her father or 911 first, according to the report.

She was reportedly running late for a class trip at the time of the accident.

She will be subject to three years of probation, her license will be suspended for two years and she will be required to perform 200 hours of community service.

Sentencing is scheduled for an unspecified date in January.
