One of the things your child can do to keep their brain sharp is to read. But how can you encourage children to read when there are so many other things they could be doing? Here are some tips:
- Place books in accessible spots.
- Make time to pick out a book together and read it together.
- Discuss the book. Talk about the characters.
- Point out words and ask what they mean. Find similar words or words that rhyme.
- Engage the child. Ask questions to help your child expand his/her thinking. By asking questions about the story you help your child develop a deeper understanding of the material.
