RAMSEY, NJ — Looking to trade the usual weekend routine for apple trees, cider doughnuts and some time outdoors? Apple-picking season is underway, and several orchards are welcoming visitors this fall.
Demarest Farms in Hillsdale began its 2026 pick-your-own apple season Aug. 29. The farm's general ripening schedule lists Empire, Freedom, Jonagold, Idared, Cameo, Pink Lady, Fuji, Evercrisp and Autumn Gala for early to mid-October, with Winecrisp, Winesap, Mutsu/Crispin, Enterprise and Granny Smith following later in the month.
Across the state line, Pennings Cidery & Orchard East in Warwick, New York, offers more than 20 apple varieties for picking. Weekend apple picking began Sept. 12 for the 2026 season, and peak weekends require reservations to guarantee entry. Visitors can also find fresh-picked apples, cider and cider doughnuts on the farm.
Masker Orchards in Warwick opened for its 2026 season Sept. 5 and is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until early November. Visitors can drive directly to the trees and explore the 200-acre orchard, while weekends and holidays bring pony rides, horse-drawn wagon rides and an apple maze.
Apple availability changes throughout the season, so check each farm's website for current picking information before heading out.
