Bergen County Lawyer Arrested, Charged with Theft by Deception

Louis A. Capazzi was arrested after allegedly taking more than $1 million in legal fees from clients and never performing legal services.

A Harrington Park man was arrested for theft by deception.

Former Oradell attorney, Louis A. Capazzi, 49, allegedly took legal fees from numerous clients without performing legal services, including bankruptcy, loan modifications, immigration work and family matters, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.

Capazzi is currently listed as Temporary Disability Inactive by order of the New Jersey State Supreme Court since June 25.

The New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics received over 40 complaints from his former clients alleging that they paid him legal fees and retainers but did not receive the legal services for which they paid. Losses are alleged to be approximately $1.1 million dollars.

Police executed a search warrant on Capazzi’s home on Oct. 2 and charged him with one count each of theft by deception.

Bail was set at $700,000 with no ten percent option, the surrender of his passport and an ankle bracelet program as conditions of bail. Capazzi was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.
