Nutritional food comes in many shapes, sizes and colors. Most of us know that vegetables and fruits are the best bang for your buck, when it comes to nutrition.  Unfortunately, many don’t think about how to get an even bigger bang.

Local grocery stores can tempt us with all kinds of produce at all times of the year, but where do the strawberries come from in February, when they are in season in June.  They travel a very far distance. They are usually picked before they are ripe and aren’t nutritionally complete. Even though it’s great being able to make apple pie at any time of the year, apples are so much tastier and full of nutrition when they are in season in the fall.

So the next time you are looking for the perfect side dish, think about what’s in season. The fall is great for squash, cauliflower, mushrooms and root vegetables, like potatoes, sweet potatoes and parsnips.

Of course pumpkins and are a must! Halloween and Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without them. Don’t forget there are so many other great dishes beyond pumpkin pie and jack-o-lanterns. Fall fruits like grapes, apples, pears and cranberries are great options to snack on or add to your dishes. A lot of these fruits and vegetables are also known for their great color.

The more color, the more jam-packed with antioxidants and minerals, which support your bodies nutritional needs.
