Motorcyclist Suffers 'Deveasting Injuries' In Rte. 17 Crash, Report Says

There were major traffic delays on Route 17 for hours Friday due to the crash.

RAMSEY, N.J. - A motorcyclist suffered "devastating injuries" due to a serious accident on Route 17 South near the Maple Shade Motel Friday afternoon.

There were reports that the motorcycle had been traveling at more than 100 mph on the highway's shoulder when it was struck by a car, Mayor Deirdre Dillon told The Record.

A medivac helicopter has been dispatched to the scene, police said.

The rider suffered "devastating injuries" when the motorcycle "went airborne" and was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for surgery, the report said.

Ramsey police were told of the motorcycle by the Mahwah police, the mayor said in the report, but a patrol officer who saw it go by decided not to pursue it for everyone's safety on the roadway, the report said.

The roadway was down to one lane while police investigated, causing major delays. Route 17 was fully reopened at about 8 p.m.
