Crossing Guard In 'Fair' Condition A Day After Accident

Jo-Ann Hans was hit and thrown in the air at a busy Bergenfield intersection Tuesday morning.

A Bergenfield crossing guard’s condition has been upgraded to ‘fair’ a day after she was struck by a car while on duty in her hometown.

Hans, 60, was placed on life support following the accident, but physicians at Hackensack University Medical Center but her condition improved in the day since, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Hans was struck by a car driven by Pawothil Abraham, 63, while she was directing traffic outside Congregation Beth Abraham, an Orthodox synagogue and thrown into the air.

Abraham was issued motor-vehicle summonses for careless driving, failure to obey a crossing guard, and failure to stop for pedestrians crossing.

Footage from a dash-mounted camera in a police cruiser at the intersection may be used in investigating the accident, The Record reported. The footage was not released because the accident is still being investigated.
